Dear Friends of UCLA Library,
As Bruins return to campus for the start of a new academic year, the 107th in UCLA’s remarkable history, our Library spaces are alive with energy, curiosity and possibility. This feeling of excitement never grows old, and I imagine my predecessors felt the same way.
UCLA researchers have always asked big questions and pursued new knowledge, and they have always depended on Library materials, resources and expertise to help them succeed: from workshops that teach critical research skills, to accessing the Library’s preeminent collections and technology-enhanced spaces, to finding the right publisher for scholarly articles.
Across generations, the Library has kept pace with the campus’s evolving needs by asking questions of our own: What do we need to provide students and faculty right now? And what will future Bruins need from their Library in 2040? 2050? These questions are foundational to the evolution of UCLA Library.
Today, as funding stagnates and inflation grows and disciplines simultaneously emerge, the Library finds itself navigating this tension with limited resources and teams stretched to capacity, with more students and programs to support. By 2030, artificial intelligence will impact every facet of our work with its ability to accelerate discovery. The Library is addressing this change—as it always has—with people taking the lead with the best technologies supporting them.
By building connections within and beyond our campus, by modernizing our practices to keep pace with the academic enterprise, and by driving excellence across collection building, research, teaching and learning, we continue to innovate and scale services for generations of Bruins to come.
