About the Collection
Steve Louie was an Asian American activist who left school to become a full-time organizer in the growing movement in 1969. He co-taught the UCLA course entitled "The Asian American Movement" with Professor Glenn Omatsu. Louie compiled the collection from different collective efforts of students, community organizations, activists and independent political presses, aiming to reflect various political ideologies and organizations. A handful of materials produced with other movement struggles, such as the Black Panther Party and United Farmworkers Union, were included in the collection. The photocopied newsletters from the Japanese American Committee for Democracy (New York) were produced during World War II and represent some of the oldest materials in the collection; the dates span from 1945 to 1947.
