Did you know? The UCLA Instructional Media Collections and Services (IMCS) is now a part of UCLA Library. Formerly a department of the UCLA Center for the Advancement of Teaching, IMCS is located in Powell Library (room 46) and is the central resource for the collection and maintenance of instructional media. The IMCS team consists of five staff and ten student employees who report to the Archive Research and Study Center(opens in a new tab) (ARSC), a department of the UCLA Film & Television Archive(opens in a new tab).
To find out more about the IMCS, we asked department manager Roger Brown a few questions.
What goals does IMCS have now at UCLA Library?
UCLA Library offers an opportunity to collaborate more deeply with operations relating to moving image access across campus. We will continue meeting student and faculty needs with the materials in our catalog. Providing the necessary titles while also acquiring new materials at the request of instructors will continue engaging students with the culture of media through new and classic video materials.
How has previous experience with IMCS prepared you for this new endeavor at UCLA Library?
IMCS and the Archive often overlap in the work we do. We have a unique and important collection used in courses and for researchers, and now they have a one-stop location to fulfill their needs.
What do you hope for the merging between IMCS and the UCLA Film & Television Archive?
Our collection of 22,000 items in combination with the Archive’s collections will work to gather the sources we each have to handle almost any request. The Media Lab in Powell 270—the only non-classroom dedicated media space on campus—offers space for in-person viewings and other uses such as training and casual drop-in study space. This is also the main viewing space for the Archive’s materials. We hope to expand upon previous overlap in our work and awareness of what we do now that we’re part of the UCLA Library.
What is a project you hope to accomplish?
Our collection is primarily made up of the requested materials from instructors. With the use of the Mini-Grant Program, we’ll continue to acquire new media with the added focus of adding more diversity to and complementing the Archive’s vast holdings with academic and educational-leaning titles. Instead of relying on the many smaller collections spread out by department, we’re centralized into one large collection of media.
