More Information

Every day is preservation day at the UCLA Library. Preservation is written into our vision statement, and all of us work to make sure scholarship and heritage, no matter what the format, will remain accessible to the world.

This year’s American Library Association Preservation Week theme is textile preservation, and institutions around the world will be using the hashtag #preswk to talk about their preservation programs and services.

Libraries and archives often have textiles like flags, banners, and costumes associated with famous people and important events. Here at the UCLA Library Preservation Studios the most exciting textile preservation work we have done lately is to clean and fluff up our very own Bruin Bear mascot heads from the UCLA University Archives.

Knowing the Bruin Mascot heads would be on exhibit this year, the University Archivist Heather Briston reached out to the Library Conservation Center for help. In the Conservation Center we documented the Bruin heads in writing and with photography, proposed a plan to clean matted fur, and build new boxes for safe storage. The Bears are now ready for the future, and our next job is to work on the recently discovered Bruin Paws!

ALA encourages libraries and other institutions to use Preservation Week(opens in a new tab) to connect our communities through events, activities, and resources that highlight what we can do, individually and together, to preserve our personal and shared collections.
